What is a Bridge?

A bridge is a permanently fixed replacement for a lost tooth or teeth. It is attached to an adjacent tooth or teeth by bonding or cementation

What is a bonded Bridge?

This is a porcelain tooth bonded to an adjacent tooth via a metal arm. It is not suitable for all situations but has the advantage that there is very little cutting of the supporting tooth to enable fixing.

What is a Cemented Bridge?

This bridge requires the preparation of one or two teeth adjacent to the gap, the tooth is reduced in size to allow room for the cementation as in a crown

The Bridge is made from porcelain fused to precious metal to make it look realistic

What does the procedure involve?

Both bridges require some reduction in the supporting teeth, much less with a bonded bridge. Impressions are taken and sent to the technician and at a follow up appointment the bridge is fitted. A temporary crown/s are fitted in the interim

How do I look after my Bridge?

You must keep the bridge very clean with normal brushing and the use of special floss which can be threaded under the false tooth part. Over the years you must expect o have the bridge replaced as movement of the gum will reveal the join.

How expensive is it?

Bridges are available on the NHS but as the appearance is so vital there are a range of materials which enhance the appearance and these are often only available privately.

Your dentist will give you a printed estimate and describe the options.
